Green Jobs - Heat Pump Engineer

Heat Pump Engineer

What they do: Heat pump engineers install and service heat pumps — clever machines that warm up homes using heat from the air or the ground. Heat pumps replace old gas boilers, which burn fossil fuels.

Why it matters: Heating our homes makes up a big chunk of the UK's carbon emissions. Switching to heat pumps is one of the fastest ways to fix that. We need thousands more heat pump engineers in the next few years.

Typical UK pay: Around £24,000 to £30,000 when newly trained, rising to £45,000–£50,000+ for skilled engineers.

How to get into it:

•      School subjects like Maths,Physics and Design and Technology are a good start.

•      You can do a Low Carbon HeatingTechnician apprenticeship (Level 3).

•      Plumbers and heating engineers can also retrain by doing short heat pump courses.
