Ecologist

What they do: An ecologist studies plants, animals and the places they live. They might survey woodlands, ponds or hedgerows to find out which species are there. Their reports help decide where it is safe to build, and how to protect nature.
Why it matters: When new roads, houses or railways are planned, ecologists make sure wildlife is not harmed. They also help bring back species that are at risk.
Typical UK pay: Around £24,000 to start, £37,000 on average, and £50,000 or more for senior ecologists.
How to get into it:
• Enjoy Biology, Geography and being outdoors. Get involved with wildlife clubs or local nature groups.
• You can take a degree in Ecology,Biology or Environmental Science.
• There are also ecology apprenticeships now, which let you train and work at the same time.
