Agronomist (Sustainable Farming Adviser)

What they do: Agronomists help farmers grow food in ways that look after the soil, the water and the wildlife. They test soil, advise on crops, and find ways to use less water and fewer chemicals.
Why it matters: Growing food the green way protects the land we depend on. Healthy soil also storeshuge amounts of carbon, which helps fight climate change.
Typical UK pay: Around £26,000 to start, £37,000 on average, and £50,000+ for senior agronomists.
How to get into it:
• Useful school subjects are Biology, Chemistry and Geography.
• Many agronomists have a degree in Agriculture, Plant Science or Environmental Science.
• There are also farming apprenticeships at colleges across the UK, so you don't have to start with university.
