Green Jobs - Forester/ Tree Officer

Forester / Tree Officer

What they do: Foresters plant, look after and harvest trees. Tree officers work for councils, checking the trees in towns and cities are healthy and safe. Both jobs involve lots of time outdoors.

Why it matters: Trees soak up carbon dioxide, give shade, stop floods and provide homes for animals. The UK has promised to plant millions more trees, so we need lots of new foresters.

Typical UK pay: Around £20,000 to £25,000 to start, rising to £35,000+ for experienced foresters and tree officers.

How to get into it:

•      Get involved with tree planting events run by local councils or charities like the Woodland Trust.

•      You can do a Forester apprenticeship, a college course in Forestry or Arboriculture, or a degree in Forest Management.

•      No degree needed — many foresters start as forest workers and train on the job.
