What is Net Zero?
"Net Zero" means we want the see-saw to be perfectly balanced. We want the amount of greenhouse gases we make to be the same as the amount we take away.
Think of it like this:
- You started with no chewy sweets. You buy 5 chewy sweets, then you eat 5 chewy sweets. You end up with the same amount you started with - none! That's "net zero" chewy sweets added.
- You earn £10 doing some weekly chores, then you spend £10 on stuff for your favourite hobby. You have gained "net zero" pounds, so you're back where you started.
With greenhouse gases, "net zero" means we're not adding any extra greenhouse gases to the atmosphere overall. We might still be making some, but we're also taking away the same amount.
