World's largest wind farm to start producing energy

When finished, the Dogger Bank wind farm will be more than twice the size of the next largest offshore wind farm. It will have cost £9Bn to complete and will eventually produce enough energy to power 6 million homes. Energy company SSE, that operates the Dogger Bank wind farm hopes that the first turbines will begin generating green electricity in the next week or two.

Green industry chiefs have warned that more subsidies will be needed to make projects of this size profitable in the future. Swedish energy firm Vattenfall has announced that it will be ending work on its £1.5Bn Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farm, because it was no longer going to be profitable. Norfolk Boreas would have produced enough energy to supply a further 1.5 million UK homes.
