E-fuels: A Potential Game Changer in the Fight Against Climate Change

With greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels driving global warming, we are all too aware of the climate crisis that we are facing. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are crucial, but there are some problems - particularly around transport - that renewables can’t easily fix. A possible solution is e-fuels, which offer a promising solution to decarbonise sectors like aviation and shipping that are difficult to electrify.

What are E-fuels?

E-fuels, also known as synthetic fuels, are produced by combining captured carbon dioxide (CO2) with hydrogen generated by electrolysing water using renewable electricity. Fossil fuels contain hydrocarbons - mixtures of hydrogen and carbon, so by combining carbon harvested from the atmosphere with hydrogen from electrolysed water, we can create or synthesise hydrocarbons that can be used instead of fossil fuels. These liquid fuels that can be used in existing combustion engines without significant modifications. Essentially, e-fuels mimic the chemical properties of fossil fuels but with a much lower carbon footprint.

How are E-fuels Made?

The production of e-fuels involves several steps:

Carbon Capture: CO2 is captured from industrial sources or directly from the air using specialised technologies.
Hydrogen Production: Renewable electricity is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. The oxygen is released back into the atmosphere, whilst the hydrogen is used to make the e-fuel.
Synthesis: The carbon captured from the air is combined with the hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels like e-diesel, e-gasoline, or e-kerosene.

Why are E-fuels a Potential Solution?

E-fuels offer several potential benefits in the fight against climate change:

Decarbonising Hard-to-Abate Sectors: E-fuels can be used in sectors like aviation, shipping, and heavy-duty transport, where electrification is challenging due to energy density and range requirements. For example, it’s difficult to build an electric airliner, because of the weight of the batteries that would be needed to power it.
Making Use of Existing Infrastructure: E-fuels can be used in existing combustion engine vehicles and infrastructure, making them a more immediate and cost-effective solution compared to replacing entire fleets. This would also enable people to keep petrol- and diesel-engined cars running using carbon neutral fuel - but only if e-fuels could be produced in sufficient quantities. At the moment, only small amounts of e-fuel are being synthesised.
Carbon Neutrality: When produced using renewable energy, e-fuels can be considered carbon neutral, as the CO2 emitted during combustion is balanced by the CO2 captured during production.
Energy Storage: E-fuels can act as a form of energy storage, if they are synthesised using excess renewable electricity during periods of high generation and low demand.
