Surge in demand for biomethane

There are now 98 biomethane plants in the UK, which produce methane gas using food leftovers and waste from farms, including manure and grass silage. Plans for a further 48 have been submitted to Ofgem, and it is hoped that many of these could be producing gas by 2020 in a programme that could see £400 million invested in the growing market for green gas.

Thirteen times more homes are now supplied with biomethane than was the case in 2017, which is a spectacular increase and shows that growing numbers of consumers are looking for ways to lower their environmental impacts and help address climate change. One of the leading biomethane suppliers, GEUK, has seen a 209% increase in customer numbers since its launch in 2017.

Biomethane is better for the environment, because it enables millions of tonnes of organic waste that would otherwise go to landfill or be incinerated to be put to good use heating people's homes.
