Letters for Change: Young Voices for Climate Education

Help your pupils make their voices heard on climate education

This September, Better Planet Education launches Letters For Change – a powerful opportunity for primary school children across England to directly petition the Department for Education to include climate change education in the primary curriculum. Letters For Change is being spearheaded by our Young Trustees, so it's a campaign being led by young people, for young people.

Why it's important

A recent survey of students from Years 5 to 13 by Teach the Future has found that 90% think it's important to learn about climate change, while a similar number want their schools to do more to stop climate change.  Young people are worried about climate change, and their voices deserve to be heard by decision-makers. Yet at the moment, climate change is not in the primary Curriculum at all. Between 20-24 October, your pupils can send letters calling for meaningful climate education to become a core part of their learning journey.

The report also found that an overwhelming majority of young people who had recent access to nature were more likely to want to learn about issues like climate change. So calling for greater access to nature whilst in primary schools is also an important issue that we're asking to be included in the government's Curriculum Review.

This campaign empowers children to become active citizens while developing crucial literacy and critical thinking skills. Research shows that students want to learn more about environmental issues – let’s ensure they have that opportunity.

Young people are ready to lead the change our planet needs. Give them the platform to make their voices count.
